What this test determines
Whether an alleged father is the biological father of an unborn child, using a blood sample from the mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father. During pregnancy, small amounts of fetal DNA circulate in the mother's bloodstream, and the laboratory separates and analyzes it.
Available from 8 weeks of pregnancy.
Why non-invasive matters
Earlier prenatal paternity methods — amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling — required drawing fluid or tissue from the uterus and carried a small but real risk of miscarriage. They also required a physician's involvement and scheduling around a narrow window.
This test requires only a standard blood draw from the mother's arm. There is no risk to the pregnancy.
